Description of the family

Erect or climbing herbs, with leafy stems. Leaves alternate, entire, often resupinate. Inflorescence a terminal bracteate cluster or raceme. Flowers bisexual, actinomorphic. Perianth-segments in 2 whorls. Stamens 6. Ovary inferior. Fruit a capsule.

Worldwide: 5 genera and 150 species in C and S America, especially the Andes
