Description of the family

Perennial rhizomatous aquatic herbs. Leaves emerging or floating; simple, alternate with entire margins; peltate. Stipules sheathing. Inflorescence solitary flowers with long peduncles. Flowers bisexual; actinomorphic. Perianth free, white, yellow, pink or red. Ovary superior; carpels free sunk in cavities on top of receptacle. Fruit nut-like.

Worldwide: 1 genus and 2 species in east Asia and eastern North America.
