Description of the family

Rootstock a corm, rarely a tuber. Leaves few and mainly basal or borne on leafy, sometimes branched, stems. Flowers solitary or in racemes, actinomorphic, bisexual. Perianth in two whorls of 3, connate at the base or free. Stamens 6. Ovary superior, 3-locular. Fruit usually a septicidal capsule. Seeds glabrous.

Worldwide: 15 genera and 165 species, Australia and S Africa to Western Europe and Western Asia.
