Description of the genus

Trees or shrubs. Stipules often conspicuous. Leaves long-petiolate, varying from simple and palmate to digitately compound, often grouped in an umbrella-shaped arrangement at the ends of branches. Leaflets very variable, often long-acuminate. Inflorescences spicate (in ours). Flowers with (4-)5 greenish petals. Stamens (4-)5. Ovary 2-locular. Styles 2.

Worldwide: 25 species in tropical and southern Africa and the Mascarene Is
