Description of the genus

Shrubs or trees. Leaves imparipinnate. Flowers axillary, solitary or in short racemes, appearing before the leaves. Calyx campanulate. Corolla crimson or orange with a yellow throat; tube short. Stamens 4, each bearing divaricate anthers; staminode 1. Ovary 2-locular. Capsule cylindric. Seeds winged.

Derivation of name: for Dom Fernando II (1816-1885) German-born King-consort of Portugal.

Worldwide: 14 species in the Old World tropics.

Zimbabwe: 2 cultivated taxa.
