Description of the genus

Biennial herbs; stem solitary, erect. Leaves basal, petiolate; pinnately decompound, upper leaves reduced, becoming sessile wholly sheathing. Inflorescence umbel, terminal and axillary, loosely compound; bracts numerous, usually reflexed; bracteols numerous. Flowers with calyx teeth obsolete to conspicuous; petals white or yellow, with an inflexed apex. Fruit ellipsoid, dorsally compressed; primary ribs bristly, secondary ribs winged. Seeds shallowly concave.

Worldwide: c. 30 species in Europe, Mediterranean, Asia, tropical Africa, Australia and New Zealand and America

Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon.
