Description of the genus

Twining herbs with long, much-branched stems arising from underground tubers. Leaves fleshy. Flowers bisexual or unisexual, borne in spikes or racemes. Bracteoles 2. Perianth segments united at the base. Filaments curved outwards in bud. Fruit spherical, enclosed in the perianth.

Derivation of name: derivation uncertain.

Worldwide: 10-15 species in tropical America.

Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon.
