Description of the genus

Climbers. Leaves opposite, compound; leaflets (in ours) 2 with a terminal 3-fid tendril. Flowers reddish-orange, borne in terminal or axillary panicles. Calyx (in ours) truncate. Corolla tubular. Stamens exserted. Disk annular. Capsule long, linear.

Derivation of name: Greek for fire and roof, referring to the colour of the flowers and the shape of the upper lip.

Worldwide: 3-4 species in tropical America

Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon.
