Description of the genus

Evergreen shrubs. Leaves, simple, opposite, lanceolate, petiolate without stipules. Flowers in terminal clusters or panicles, 4 petals alternating with the stamens. Fruit a drupe with one stone, bright red.

Worldwide: 3-10 species native to eastern Asia from the Himalayas to Japan.
