Description of the genus

Herbs, annual or perennial, mostly glabrous; rootstock usually not developed occasionally rhizomatous; stems erect or decumbent, sometimes fasciculate or moss-like, base rarely woody. Leaves alternate, opposite or verticillate; lamina with base often spurred; margins normally entire. Inflorescence terminal or axillary, cymose, often corymbiform, 1-many flowered. Sepals and petals free or basally connate; petals usually yellow, less often white or reddish. Fruit follicles. Seeds few-many, smooth or papillate, less often striate.

Worldwide: 420 species in northern hemisphere, extending to Southern hemisphere in Africa and South America.
