Description of the genus

Trees with flattened branches which may be jointed. Leaves scale-like in 4s, 2 narrow lateral leaves separated by 2 smaller facial leaves with acute spreading tips meeting the base of the next whorl. Seed cones oblong; fertile scales 2 elongated; apex with recurved prickle covering 2 fused upper scales and flanked by 2 small lower scales. Seeds 2 per scale, with 1 large and 1 rudimentary wing.

Worldwide: Three species found in moist forests of eastern Asia and western North America.

Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon.
