Description of the genus

Perennial herbs up to 3 m high. Leaves ovate, deeply pinnately or palmately lobed; upper leaves sometimes linear. Flowers in cymes. Calyx 5 lobed. Corolla white to reddish or mauve, 2-lipped; lower lip lobed. One of the fundamental herbs of Chinese medicine.

Worldwide: 24 species native to Europe and Asia.

Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon.
