Description of the genus

Glabrous, erect or ascending annual up to 1 m high. Leaves on long petioles, broadly ovate. Calyx enlarging to 5 cm. after flowering, campanulate, oblique, membranous; the margin 5-angled. Flowers small white, fragrant.

Worldwide: 8 species native to south west Asia and the Mediterranean.

Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon.
