Description of the genus

Shrubs. Stipules with apex lobed. Leaves opposite, decussate. Inflorescence cymes, few to several-flowered. Flowers 5-merous, tubular; calyx lobes filiform, some flowers in each inflorescence with enlarged foliaceous lobes; stamens inserted in upper half of tube. Fruit capsular. Species 6 in tropical Africa.
