Description of the genus

Herbs, annual or perennial; stems usually slender, diffuse or erect, sometimes rigid. Leaves opposite or rosulate at the base, upper ones sometimes alternate, variously shaped, margins variously dentate; upper leaves often somewhat different. Flowers solitary, axillary or in terminal racemes. Calyx 5-lobed. Corolla usually tubular, tube very short. Fruit a capsule. Seeds many, brown, usually curved.

Worldwide: About 60 species in southern Africa.

Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon.
