Annual, biennial or perennial herbs. Leaves: basal usually pinnatifid with winged petioles; cauline alternate, sessile, usually with undulate margins. Inflorescence of terminal bracteate spikes. Flowers zygomorphic, opening at dusk or dawn, 4-merous. Hypanthium deciduous, obconic. Petals usually white, fading reddish, unequal, clawed. Stamens 8. Ovary 4-locular; stigma deeply 4-lobed. Fruit a short indehiscent nut-like capsule, often shortly stalked. Derivation of name: Greek word meaning superb. Worldwide: 21 species in North America. Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon. |
