Description of the genus

Usually treated in most floras within the genus Caesalpinia; we do not at this stage have details as to how Tara is separated from Caesalpinia.

Derivation of name: Named for Tara, a S American vernacular name for Tara (Caesalpinia) spinosa

Worldwide: Native to S America, from Venezuela to Bolivia and Chile; widely cultivated elsewhere in the world and naturalised in California

Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon.
