Description of the genus

Shrubs or trees, unarmed. Leaves alternate, gland-dotted, usually imparipinnate. Inflorescence paniculate, or reduced to cymes or racemes, axillary or terminal. Flowers ellipsoid or obovoid; sepals 4 or 5, connate at base; petals 4 or 5 imbricate in bud; stamens distinct. Fruit a berry; pulp mucilaginous; endocarp fleshy. Seeds with membranous or fleshy testa.

Worldwide: 12 species from Indomalesia to the Pacific

Zimbabwe: 2 cultivated taxa.
