Description of the genus

Trees or shrubs. Leaves alternate, simple. Flowers axillary, solitary or borne in few-flowered cymes, 5-merous. Sepals linear, deciduous with the petals. Stamens 15, with long filaments, shorter than the 5 staminodes. Fruit a woody capsule. Seeds flattened, winged apically.

Derivation of name: refers to the winged seeds.

Worldwide: 25 species in tropical Asia

Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon.
