Description of the genus

Basal parts either a rhizome or a partly rhizomatous bulb. Petioles forming a false stem; lamina lanceolate to ovate. Scape solid, unwinged; involucral bracts 4 to many. Flowers numerous, red or pink. Fruit a spherical berry. Seeds 1-3.

Worldwide: 9 species in tropical Africa

Zimbabwe: 2 cultivated taxa.
