Description of the genus

Dioecious trees. Leaves alternate, simple, stipulate. Buds with several clearly visible unequal outer scales. Flowers appearing before the leaves, in pendulous catkins, catkin scales toothed or laciniate; each flower with a cup-like disk; stamens 4-many.

Derivation of name: the classical name for poplars

Worldwide: 35 species in northern temperate regions

Zimbabwe: 3 cultivated taxa.
