Description of the genus

Trees or shrubs. Flowers appearing before or after the leaves, in usually erect catkins, bracts entire or toothed; each flower with 1-2 fleshy glands; stamens 2-many.

Worldwide: About 500 species, mainly north temperate but some tropical and south temperate.

Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon.
