Description of the genus

Erect or decumbent herbs or subshrubs, more or less branched. Leaves simple, alternate or fasciculate, entire or variously dissected. Inflorescence a terminal, spike-like raceme; flowers numerous. Calyx 4–7-partite, Petals 4–7, free, unequal, simple or clawed. Ovary sessile or stipitate, unilocular. Fruit a closed or open capsule. Seeds many, rotund or reniform.

Worldwide: 60 species, occurring in Europe, the Mediterranean area to Central Asia.
