Description of the genus

Monoecious or dioecious trees, with milky latex. Stipules caducous. Leaves alternate; petiole with a pair of glands at apex; lamina simple, usually entire. Inflorescence a solitary false raceme, usually predominantly male with 1 or more female flowers at the base. Male flowers: sepals 3 (in ours); petals 0; disc 0; stamens 8 (in ours); pistillode 0. Female flowers: calyx lobes 2-3; petals 0; disc 0; ovary 2(-3)-locular, with 1 ovule per loculus. Styles 2. Fruit 2(-3)-lobed, ± indehiscent. Seeds ovoid-ellipsoid.

Worldwide: 35 species, occurring from tropical Asia to Australia

Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon.
