Description of the genus

Perennial herb. Stipules laciniate, foliaceous, eglandular. Leaves alternate. Inflorescence of single flowers in the leaf axils. Petals unequal, the anterior larger and sessile.

Worldwide: c. 400 species in temperate zones, especially the N hemisphere and the Andes

Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon.
