Description: Medium-sized to large deciduous tree. Bark greyish-brown, flaking, leaving pale patches. Leaves paripinnate with 4-6 pairs of (sub)opposite leaflets. Leaflets oblong-elliptic, 3-9 cm long, dark green above paler below, leathery; margin entire with a yellow rim. Flowers in small clusters, the single petal pinkish-red with yellow veining. Fruit a large flattened pod, thickly woody, 10-17 cm, splitting to reveal large, shiny black seeds with a bright red aril.
Notes: The wood, known as Chamfute, is hard and durable. The tree is threatened by illegal cutting for wood carvings.
Although recorded at up to 1530 m in altitude, it is much commoner at lower altitudes.
