Description of the family

Minute aquatic herbs, floating (in ours), often occurring in great numbers. Structure very reduced, consisting of a flat or curved thallus; stem and leaves undifferentiated. Roots present or 0, suspended in the water, the tip covered by a cap. Vegetative reproduction usual with a daughter thallus budding from a lateral pocket. Flowers unisexual, produced erratically, developing in a "budding pouch", enclosed by a spathe or spathe 0. Male flowers 1-2, reduced to a single stamen; anthers 1-2-thecous. Female flowers solitary, flask-shaped; style short; ovary 1-locular. Seeds ellipsoid, usually ribbed.

Worldwide: 4 genera and 25 species, cosmopolitan.
