Description of the family

Trees or shrubs, evergreen (in ours). Stipules small or 0. Leaves alternate, simple. Flowers usually unisexual, 4(-8)-merous, actinomorphic, in fascicles, cymes or racemes. Petals free or connate at base. Stamens free, alternating with the corolla lobes. Disk 0. Ovary superior, 3- or more locular. Fruit drupaceous.

Worldwide: 4 genera and 420 species, almost cosmopolitan.
