Description of the family

Terrestrial ferns with scaly rhizomes. Stipe not articulated, often dark-coloured, smooth and shiny. Fronds 1-4-pinnate. Sori variously arranged. Sporangia often mixed with paraphyses.

Worldwide: 35 genera and 825 species, cosmopolitan but mainly tropical
