Perennials. Leaves either basal or clustered at the ends of the branches. Flowers bisexual, solitary or few. Corolla actinomorphic with a very short tube; lobes spreading. Stamens 6, anthers linear. Ovary inferior, 3-locular with many ovules in each loculus; style simple. Fruit a capsule. Seeds black. A family which lacks a modern treatment and of which the taxonomy is not clear at all. Our list of species, which was extracted from SRGH, differs significantly from that in Mapaure and Timberlake (2004). Worldwide: 8 genera and 288 species, S America, Africa, Madagascar and S Arabia. |
