Description of the family

Herbs or rarely shrubs. Leaves alternate or opposite, simple, pinnate or palmate. Stipules 0. Flowers bisexual, actinomorphic, 5-merous. Disk hypogynous. Calyx lobed. Corolla funnel-shaped, campanulate or rotate. Stamens attached to the corolla, alternating with corolla lobes. Ovary superior, usually 3-locular; placentas axile. Ovules usually many in each loculus, Style 1, usually 3-fid. Fruit a usually loculicidal capsule.

Worldwide: 20 genera and 290 species in America and Eurasia
