Description of the family

Annual or perennial herbs or subshrubs, with milky latex. Stipules 0. Leaves alternate, very rarely opposite or whorled, usually simple. Inflorescence cymose, racemose or flowers solitary. Bracts present with 2 bracteoles. Flowers bisexual (rarely unisexual), actinomorphic (3-)5(-10)-merous. Petals united to varying degrees, sometimes ± free. Ovary ± inferior, rarely superior, 2-10-locular. Style 1. Fruit a capsule (in ours).

Worldwide: 82 genera and 2000 species (including Lobeliaceae), cosmopolitan
