Description of the family

Evergreen trees. Stipules 0. Leaves alternate, simple, gland-dotted. Inflorescences of axillary flowers, either solitary or in few-flowered clusters. Flowers bisexual, actinomorphic. Sepals 3. Petals 5-12, free or united at base, in 1-2 whorls. Stamens 6-12. Ovary superior, 1-locular; ovules 2-many. Style short; stigmas 2-6. Fruit a berry. Seeds 2-many, glossy.

Worldwide: 5 genera and 13 species, occurring in tropical Africa and America.
