Cunoniaceae - Wild alder family

Description of the family

Evergreen trees or shrubs. Stipules large, spoon-like (in ours). Leaves opposite, 3-foliolate or imparipinnate. Flowers bisexual, actinomorphic. Sepals 4-5. Petals 4-5. Stamens 8-10. Ovary superior, 2-locular. Fruit a capsule crowned with persistent styles. Seeds winged.

This family is included on the basis of an empty labelled folder at SRGH. Considerable doubt exists as to whether this family occurs as a native plant in Zimbabwe at all.

Worldwide: 19 genera and 340 species, mostly southern hemisphere.
