Description of the family

Trees or shrubs. Stipules 0 or minute. Leaves simple, alternate, rarely subopposite or subwhorled. Flowers bisexual, less often unisexual or polygamous. Sepals 4-5, united at base into a tube (in ours). Petals 4-5, free. Disk annular or with lobes alternating with the stamens. Ovary superior or inferior, 1-6-locular; ovules numerous. Styles 1-6, free or joined. Fruit a capsule or berry.
