Description of the family

Spiny or unarmed, trees or shrubs. Stipules present but may be caducous, or 0. Leaves alternate, simple, petiolate, 3-veined from the base; margin entire or toothed. Inflorescences usually axillary, sometimes terminal or with flowers solitary. Flowers bisexual or unisexual, actinomorphic; pedicels often articulated. Sepals 3-6 or more, sometimes accrescent, sometimes similar to the petals in appearance. Petals 0 or 3-12 or more. Stamens usually numerous. Ovary superior (more rarely semi-inferior). Styles 1-10, free or connate. Fruit a ± fleshy berry or capsule. Seeds sometimes arillate.

Worldwide: 86 genera and 875 species, mainly tropical with a few subtemperate.
