Description of the genus

Annuals, perennials or soft shrubs. Leaves opposite or ternate. Inflorescence a panicle or raceme; bracts either small or the terminal large and brightly coloured. Calyx 2-lipped, 5-toothed; upper lip broadly ovate or subrotund. Corolla 2-lipped. Stamens 4, didynamous, exserted, directed downwards upon the lower side of the corolla tube or lower lip of the corolla; filaments ± connate, glabrous.

Worldwide: 28 species in tropical and S Africa
