Description of the genus

Annual or biennial herbs. Leaves opposite. Flowers in terminal racemes at ends of the branches or solitary and axillary, bracteate, pedicellate; bracteoles 0. Calyx 5-lobed. Corolla 2-lipped, tube produced into a spur, posterior lip 4-lobed, anterior lip entire or emarginate with palate at base. Stamens 4, didynamous. Ovary 2-locular. Capsule laterally flattened. Seeds with entire or interrupted membranous wing.

Worldwide: c. 60 species mostly from southern Africa.

Zimbabwe: 2 taxa.
