Description of the genus

Perennial herbs; stems arising from a persistent basal organ; this either (1) a short swollen aerial stem arising from an underground tuber of about the same diameter or (2) a scarcely swollen stem arising from a broader swollen subterranean tuber. Leaves ± fleshy, linear to strap-shaped; sinuate to pinnatilobed. Corolla lacking a basal spur (but may be gibbous). Flowers solitary in axils, the colour (in ours) yellow (sometimes suffused with purple) or dark purple to wine-red. Calyx small. Stamens 4. Ovary 2-locular. Fruit indehiscent, with 4 prominent wings; upper part sterile, beak-like.

Worldwide: 18 species in tropical and S Africa
