Description of the genus

Herbs, suffrutices or small shrubs. Stipules connate, hairy within. Leaves opposite, rarely in whorls of 3. Flowers in axillary, often opposite, cymes or fascicles. Calyx with 5 linear to ovate lobes. Corolla green, greenish-yellow or -white; tube cylindric; lobes reflexed with a filiform appendage (in ours). Ovary 3-5-locular with 1 pendulous ovule per loculus. Fruit spherical or obovoid with 2-5 pyrenes, crowned with calyx limb.

Worldwide: 10 species in warm regions of Africa
