Description of the genus

Annual herb. Leaves alternate, rarely subopposite. Inflorescence a lax cymose terminal panicle. Phyllaries in many rows, glandular, imbricate, narrow with scarious margins and an acute or acuminate apex. Capitula homogamous (in ours); disk florets bisexual, orange-yellow, narrowly tubular, shortly 5-lobed, glandular. Receptacle without scales. Anther-bases sagittate, tailed; style-arms flattened, wider at the apex. Achenes narrowly ellipsoid (in ours), rounded at the apex. Pappus in 1 row, slender and minutely barbellate.

Worldwide: 18 species from C Asia to Sri Lanka, naturalised elsewhere; 1 species (P. indicum) probably native to Africa
