Description of the genus

Perennial herbs, with tuberous roots. Leaves opposite, imparipinnate; leaflets usually ovate and toothed. Capitula long-pedunculate, heterogamous; ray-florets male or neuter; disk-florets bisexual. Achenes flattened. Pappus 0 or composed of 2 small teeth.

Derivation of name: Dahlia: from Andreas Dahl, a Swedish botanist, 1751-1789.

Worldwide: 29 species in the mountains of Mexico to Columbia
