Description of the genus

Perennials (ours). Inflorescence a solitary (rarely paired) terminal, 1-sided raceme. Spikelets 2-3-flowered, sessile, alternate in 2 rows, disarticulating above the glumes. Glumes unequal, 1-nerved, membranous, shorter than the spikelet; upper longer than the lower, minutely 2-toothed at apex, with a terminal awn. Lowermost floret fertile; fertile lemma dorsally flattened, prominently awned from the sinus of the 2-toothed apex; middle floret, if present, male or fertile.

Worldwide: 17 species in the tropics
