Description of the genus

Annuals or perennials. Inflorescence of racemes borne on a central axis. Spikelets in pairs, dorsally or weakly laterally flattened; lower glume 1/2 to 3/4 length of spikelet; upper glume and lower lemma thickened and laterally flattened at apex as if nipped by pincers; upper lemma dorsally flattened, crustaceous, with a little green crest at apex; palea usually with reflexed trip protruding slightly from lemma.

Worldwide: 19 species in the Old World tropics.
