Description of the genus

Lemon-scented perennials (in ours). Inflorescence a single raceme, terminal or axillary and sometimes gathered into a false panicle. Racemes flexuous; internodes columnar to subclavate, strongly oblique at the summit, neither crater-like nor scarious-rimmed. Sessile spikelet: callus often large; lower glume laterally 2-keeled, the keels ciliately fringed and often with an oil-streak on the inner side, not ridged, usually 2-fid; upper glume awnless; lower floret reduced to a hyaline lemma; upper lemma entire and awnless. Pedicellate spikelet well-developed, awnless or shortly aristate.

Worldwide: 15 species in tropical Africa, America and Australia
