Description of the genus

Perennials. Ligule a ciliate membrane. Inflorescence a single tough, dorsally flattened, raceme. Rhachis internodes and pedicels stout, clavate; pedicels fused to the internode. Sessile spikelet dorsally flattened; lower glume narrowly elliptic, smooth; lower floret reduced to a lemma; upper lemma awnless. Pedicelled spikelet similar to sessile but lacking a callus.

Worldwide: 12 species in warm regions of the Old World
