Description of the genus

Perennial species (in ours). Leaves flat and inrolled, without hairs at the mouth of the leaf sheath. Inflorescence (in ours) composed of 1(-2) spikelet(s). Lower glumes arranged distichously, the upper glumes distinctly spirally arranged. Perianth 0. Stamens 3; stigmas 3; the base of the style not persistent. Nutlet smooth to tuberculate, not transversely wrinkled.

Derivation of name: for Peter Christian Abildgaard, 1740-1801, Danish veterinarian, naturalist and professor at Copenhagen.
