Description of the genus

Climbing or creeping perennial herbs, rooting at nodes. Leaf lamina entire, not hastate, usually with pellucid glands. Inflorescences numerous, subtended by a bract. Spathe erect; spadix with male flowers above and female below. Flowers unisexual. Berries usually red. Seeds with abundant endosperm.

Worldwide: 20 species in tropical Africa, mostly in the rainforests of W and C Africa

Zimbabwe: 1 taxon.
