Description of the genus

Acaulescent, tuberous, terrestrial herbs. Leaves several, basal, in a rosette; lamina simple, hastate-sagittate. Inflorescence produced with the leaves; peduncle longer than petiole. Spathe: basal part obconic; apical broadly ovate, spreading, cuspidate, white or brightly coloured. Spadix with female flowers at base, sometimes with staminodes scattered between the female flowers; and male flowers at apex. Flowers unisexual, without perianth segments, densely congested. Anthers sessile. Ovary 1-5-locular. Berries fleshy, green or orange.

Worldwide: 6 species occurring in the tropics and South Africa
