Description of the genus

Annual herbs. Stipules scarious, caducous. Leaves opposite (but contracted lfy branches in the axils make them appear whorled), linear, sessile. Inflorescence of loose, terminal dichasia. Flowers 5-merous. Sepals free, with membranous margin. Petals entire. Stamens 10. Styles 3 or 5. Capsule 3-5-valved. Seeds with a narrow winged margin.

Worldwide: 6 species in temperate zones (1 endemic to N Patagonia)
